In October 2004, after a 1 year wait since its introduction during ENTSORGA in Cologne, Germany back in September 2003, the very first HAMMEL VB 950 "Red Giant" made its way to the U.S. East Coast. With a long list of anxious customers, the awe-inspiring behemoth started its tour to prove once and for all that no competitor can stand a chance when challenged by a HAMMEL shredder.
The first stop of the tour was A.B. Dauman Industries in Carteret, NJ, one of the largest wood processors in the Northeast. Fully remote controlled, the machine was quickly unloaded from the trailer and walked over to the selected site where big tree trunks, huge stumps, and rootstocks were already waiting. Anything that was fed into the 15 cubic yard hopper was quickly crushed and swallowed up. Even the largest stumps and rootstocks - app. 6-7' in diameter and trunks up to 3' in diameter never had a fair chance against the Red Giant's fine German engineering, patented shaft design, and powerful Caterpillar 640 hp C16 Diesel.

Robert Christman, one of the 3 owners of A.B. Dauman, put it this way: "This is definitely the way to go to process even clean wood, that needs to be ground to app. 2" to create mulch, our biggest product and a really good business this year. The existing high-speed grinders have a lot less to do, when they get the wood "prepared" through a primary shredder like the RED GIANT. The power of the 950DK gives me even the possibility to dig out and grind long forgotten stumps, sitting almost overgrown everywhere out in our yard.

The second stop of the tour was the Salem County Landfill in Alloway, NJ. After spending lots of time in wood at our first site we had a chance to show off the "Red Giant" in some tough C&D here. Just as expected, the "Red Giant" processed everything we fed into it without protest. Even a 2'x2' office safe became unrecognizable after only reversing once and was discharged by the over-belt magnet, along with all the other scrap metal separated from the material.

Michael P. Chapman, Executive Director with the Salem County Utilities Authority, who has rented a smaller HAMMEL VB 850 since July 2004 had this to say: "This machine, compared to the 850, gives us the flexibility we need even though we are not using its full capabilities. The RED GIANT is always ready when my guy comes back with a new bucket of C&D. We love what the HAMMEL shredder does to our landfill. Without this machine we would most likely already be closed because our airspace is running out too quickly and the next cell is still not ready to use. With the shredded C&D debris, we are able to reduce app. 3-1 and compaction goes a lot better with less runs."

Our third stop led us back to Long Island to the Town of Hempstead, particularly the Merrick Transfer Station in Merrick, NY. This location processes app. 1,500 t/day of MSW, C&D, and other bulky waste to provide 2/3 of the fuel needed at a nearby incinerator. About 400 tons/day of this material is bulky waste, and a lot of that is in the form of old mattresses. It was amazing watching 2-3 mattresses at a time getting chewed up by the "Red Giant", keeping in mind that mattresses and carpet are among the toughest materials you can find to test the real power of a shredder. Even a 22' boat disappeared in once piece, along with its 120hp outboard motor.

Roy Davis, Transfer Station Manager: "It's a monster, unreal! Not comparable at all with my 850. Look at the clearance underneath the shafts down to the conveyor belt, there's at least a full foot more clearance. This would spare us a lot of headaches when running the machine in C&D - you know, with all the steel in it and the problems with torn conveyor belts… Also the throughput - the RED GIANT is barely reversing and actually way too fast to keep up with feeding it for a constant output!"
